Universit Laval wins the 2011 University Trading Challenge

(New York, NY) – Université Laval student team finished first out of 20 teams competing in the University Trading Challenge in New York on December 9th, 2011. The Université Lava Team was part of the 80 students, representing 16 universities, that participated in a financial trading completion that started November 1st and concluded at the final day event hosted at Baruch College’s Wasserman Trading Floor.

University of Virginia’s team finished second with Tulane University finishing third in this highly competitive competition.

The University Trading Challenge required the student teams to tackle three distinct challenges and demonstrate their aptitude for consistently selecting and executing trading strategies. All teams used simulated trading software provided by CapitalWave Inc.

Pierre Tremblay, faculty advisor from Université Laval “Being able to compete in three different aspects of finance against other universities across North America is an amazing experience for any student. The level of competition our students faced is a great preparation for what is coming when they are going to hit the markets. Plus, being a french-canadian university, it was an incredible window for our University to show the world that our finance students have great knowledge and have the ability to apply the theory into practice.

Kendrick Junerto, from the University of Virginia and participant said: “The University Trading Challenge 2011 was one of the best competitions I have taken part. Not only did my team and I manage to do our university proud by clinching the second place ranking, I have gained much invaluable knowledge that would not be possible in any classroom. Most importantly, this competition has reaffirmed my interest in sales and trading and business. One of the benefits that this competition offers to a participant is the fact that we were able to experience the situations in the real world through the 3 different segments for the competition. Therefore, it will help us prepare for our working career in the future.

Bryant Nielson, Director for the University Trading Challenge commented, “The quality of students and their concentration on each of the challenges is testament to the quality of programs at the participating universities. These students were of extremely high quality and should be hired by Wall Street firms without any hesitation.”

The University Trading Challenge is a realistic capital market trading competition designed for both Undergraduate and Graduate students seeking degrees in finance, economics, mathematics and business.
